REGENERATION

The introduction of any wild plant into a healthy natural area should be done only with the advice of a botanist who is familiar with your local ecosystem. Otherwise, you should probably you should not try at all, as the last thing you want to do is introduce invasive plant species or a disease into a wild space. The regeneration of areas in need of restoration (such as disused fields, meadows, marsh areas, and woodlots previously used for grazing cattle or sheep) requires research and planning. Use local seed where possible and aim for diversity.

A guide to reintroducing wild plants back into areas undergoing natural regeneration in central Canada is The Native Plant Resource Guide for Ontario available from the Ontario Government's Ministry of Natural Resources. An excellent, practical book, Growing Woodland Plants by Clarence and Eleanor G. Birdseye, published by Dover in 1972 is well worth searching for.
