Saskatoon Berry Compote
Saskatoon berries - Misâskwatômina - Serviceberries - Juneberries - Sugar plum (Amelanchier alnifolia) are delicious berries from the prairies that have a similar taste to wild blueberries with a distinctive cherry almond flavour. In areas where they are abundant, they are often used fresh in pies. Slow cooked, they gain a unique almond-like after taste. They are most often used like other berries, consumed directly on toast, ice cream, yogurt, or added to fruit salads. Saskatoon berries have a thicker skin than other purple fruit berries and as a result there is more texture to saskatoon compote than other berries such as blueberries and haskap.
